Mac OS X client 10.3.9 will not communicate with the server

I am running the current version of the OS X client 4.4 yet I cannot get the 10.3.9 workstations to talk to the server.  Could not find SPSoftwareDataType in system_profiler XML.  Corrupted output? is the error I get back.  This only happens on 10.3.x machines.
